Liverpool Restaurant Owner Charged Over Rodent Infestation After Zero Food Hygiene Rating

A Liverpool restaurant owner, Dove Ross-Williams, was charged with three counts of breaching food safety and hygiene regulations after health inspectors found 27 mice and evidence of severe rodent infestation at Chung Ku in August 2019. The inspection revealed droppings in food preparation areas, a dead mouse under equipment, and poor cleaning practices. The restaurant was closed voluntarily for two weeks, and Ross-Williams pleaded guilty, receiving a £3,050 fine.

Super-sized Mice Eating Seabird Chicks on Gough Island, RSPB Warns of Extinction by 2057

Invasive mice on Gough Island have grown to 50% larger than average and are preying on MacGillivray's prion chicks, with only one chick surviving out of 50 monitored nests in 2020. Since 2014, only 21 chicks have fledged from 370 nests. The RSPB warns there's a 31% chance the seabird species will go extinct on the island by 2057 unless the mice are eradicated. A mouse eradication campaign, delayed by the pandemic, is set to begin in 2021.

Pest Infestation and Vermin Complaints at Beaumont Hospital

Staff at Beaumont Hospital reported multiple pest infestations and vermin sightings across various units in 2020, including insects in dialysis and detox wards, mice in canteens and staff rooms, and bluebottles in a cath lab. A total of 65 work orders were placed with a pest control company, with recurring issues in the intensive care unit pantry, X-ray canteen, and mortuary grounds. Pest controllers conducted routine and follow-up visits as part of a contracted health and safety process.
